The Painting of "Nocturne 5&6"
/The Painting of “Nocturne 5&6”
In this video, I am painting two 24x24 canvases in my “Nocturne” series. The medium is acrylic paint. I did a few paintings in this series maybe 4 or 5 years ago, and thought it was time to revisit the series again. It’s always interesting for me to revisit a series now and again to see how my handling of the medium and series topic may change (or not change).
The Nocturne series explores a subject that I have done in several other series over the years, and that is this realm between darkness and light as the sky and light changes from day to night or night into day. While these are both abstract landscape paintings, they don’t try to depict the landscape-or a specific landscape or place, but rather colors and values that may occur when the outside light is in transition.
I am using dark blues and violets as my dominate colors, because they impart the feeling of what I am trying to express. The colors used in this painting are all Golden Heavy Body Acrylics:
Anthraquinone Blue (to which I have added some Mars Black to tone down the intensity)
Dioxazine Purple
Light Violet
Blue-Violet, which is a special mixture I make
Medium Magenta
Diarylide Yellow
Indian Yellow
Titanium White
It’s a very simple color palette and I am using all the colors straight from the jar (which I almost never do) with no mixing except adding white as needed for creating lighter values. All mixing is done on the canvas (which I also usually don’t do). I am trying for a loose, fresh approach with visible brush strokes and no overworking. I move quickly across the surface without lingering anywhere for very long.
