Social Media for Artists

Social Media for Artists

I’ll be the first to admit, I don’t often post on social media - either personal posts or art posts. It isn’t that I don’t know how to do it, I do. I have taken social media courses from some of the top names in the US, and I have a good handle on what works best for posts, how to organize them, photograph, post, etc. However, I choose not to post very often, because I just don’t like living my personal or professional life on social media. I’m a private person and don’t like to splash everything I do to thousands of people that I don’t know. There, I said it, now we can move on.

This post deals with the two most popular social media sites for artists: Facebook and Instagram. The common theme I want to address for both platforms is the separation of personal and art posts. I constantly see artists who have no idea how to post on social media, so hopefully this will be a helpful guide.

On Facebook you have a personal page for all of your personal posts: family, travel, etc. You should set up a dedicated business page for your art/art business where you post your art and art related activities. This is where you accumulate followers for your art business - and people will follow your page to see your art. If you have a personal page you can set up a business page, and posts can be shared between the two pages.

If you have only a personal page and you mix your art posts with family pics, vacations pics and the like, the friends who view your page will get a little of everything, which probably won’t be good. If however, you have a business page where you display your art, you can begin to build a following around the art and you can even run specific Facebook ads, if needed, targeting those who follow your page.

Instagram is similar, and of course, is owned by Facebook. On Instagram you won’t have a page, you’ll have a feed with a name attached to it. My feed name is @davidmkesslerfineart. Mine obviously is for art because it has “fine art” at the end of it. This feed is dedicated to my art and people that follow the feed expect me to put pictures of my art there for them to see - that is why they follow my feed in the first place. They don’t follow me because they want to see me on vacation with my spouse, or riding my bike or going fishing. If your feed has a name that has “art” in it, or “fine art” or “studio” or “painting” or the like, you should be posting your art, not personal pics. People will follow you because you make great art, but if they keep seeing pics of your kids, or vacations, or pets they will no longer follow you or your feed.

The way to build a following for your art is by………. you guessed it, showing people your art on a dedicated page or feed. Not by mixing your art with personal pictures. Separate the personal from the professional, show art that has a consistency to it, so it looks like somehow it all ties together, and you will see positive results. More followers, more likes, more engagement. This is a simple strategy that usually gets overlooked by most artists.
