Art Degree Myth - Busted
There is a myth out in the art world that you need an art degree to be a good art instructor and/or a good painter. The fact is, that is completely false. A master’s degree is required if you want to teach college courses, but for teaching any other types of classes and workshops a degree is not required. I could be a bit biased here given that I have a degree in architecture, not art.
While an art degree is good for providing a solid foundation to build an art making career upon, it may not be the best education for one who wants to be a workshop instructor. I know many professional artists, and only a small handful of them have art degrees, most do not. Some of these folks are workshop instructors, class instructors, college professors or just painters. The best workshop instructors I have ever taken courses from lacked any type of art degree. Having an art degree doesn’t automatically make you a better painter or a better teacher. It all depends on the individual and not the education.
You can be whatever you want to be regardless of what type of degree you have. You just have to be motivated and resourceful enough to make it work for you.
