Discipline = Freedom

Discipline = Freedom

There is a phrase used by author, military veteran and podcaster Jocko Willink that I think perfectly fits professional artists: Discipline = Freedom. It’s one thing that sets them apart from amateur artists.

Most people don’t realize that it takes discipline to be a professional artist and that it’s that discipline that can make you successful. Most people think of artists as unorganized (many are) and only paint when they are “inspired.” Nothing could be further from the truth. The best artists tend to be the most disciplined. Here are a few things that require discipline in art:

  • Creating a consistent body of work.

  • A systematic studio process that yields consistent work.

  • Creating a color plan for a painting rather than throwing in every color you own.

  • To forge your own path, and to remain on the path without being distracted by the fads that come and go. Most all amateur painters get so distracted by the next shiny object, that they cannot choose a path, let alone remain on it.

  • Create new work on a regular basis.

  • Create new content on a regular basis.

Here is where the freedom comes in. Once you have established your path, you have essentially established the parameters within which you work. When you know where you’re going and how you’ll get there, the decision making becomes so much easier. You don’t wonder what to do or worry about things outside of your path. I am free to do whatever I want to do that aligns with my path. The possibilities are limitless.

If you decide you want to be more disciplined in your art and associated work, I guarantee you will be more successful! Best wishes on your journey.
