The Painting of "Etched in Time"
/The Painting of “Etched in Time”
Here’s another painting video. In this one I am using a somewhat different approach than normal for me. I covered the surface with a loose wash underpainting of Burnt Sienna, Titan Buff and Pyrrole Orange and let it dry. While doing the over painting, I try to let parts of the underpainting show through. To me it gives this piece a sort of “worn-in” look and feel. This piece is for my sister and her husband, and will be placed on a deep blue wall with orange window coverings. I wanted the orange to really pop against the blue of the wall.
My color palette for this painting consists of Golden Heavy Body Acrylic Paint in the following colors:
Pyrrole Orange
Burnt Sienna
Minty G (my custom mixture)
Cobalt Teal
Cobalt Turquoise
Cerulean Blue Deep
Cobalt Blue Hue
Indigo (my combination of Golden’s Anthraquinone Blue and Mars Black)
Titanium White
The idea was a blue dominant painting that also included a bit of blue-green to keep it extra cool. First I mixed a bit of the Pyrrole Orange into all the blues and blue-greens to mute the color. I then added Titanium White to each, realizing that I wanted to keep the value range mostly in the light middle value range.
I begin the painting with a dar/dark middle value shape to help me locate an accent area, then I proceed to lay in some light middle values until I determine I need to add more darks for contrast. I work, trying to let some of the orange underpainting show through as the centers of interest and also other small accents throughout the painting, particularly on the edges of the canvas. I fill out the darks and the middle values until they look complete. I transition some paint between the accents and the body of blue until I think they work. I add plenty of scraping and shape shape and value adjustments, and I’m done.
P.S. As a postscript I want to mention that while I will continue to post this type of painting video (non-instructional), I will not be posting anymore (except maybe on rare occasions) multi-part instructional painting videos. The ones filmed previously have been unlisted on this Vlog and my YouTube Channel. Times are changing rapidly in the art business and moving forward instructional painting videos will be available only in my monetized programs (online and live workshops).
