Sell Your Art at an Open Studio Event

Sell Your Art at an Open Studio Event

Have you ever held an open studio event to sell your art? If not, you may want to try it. People ask me all the time how to sell art. It’s complicated and harder to do every year - because now everyone is an “artist.” One way to help increase your art sales is to hold an open studio event.

I have mine each spring in my studio. If you don’t have a formal studio, then maybe you could have it on your lawn. I know an artist who doesn’t have a formal studio so she hangs the art all over her house. I’m not sure it matters how you do it, only that you do it.

Determine when you’re going to host it and set the date in stone. Design and order postcards to mail to existing customers and any potential new customers. If this is your first one and you don’t have a track record of sales, then invite your friends and ask each one to bring a friend. When they arrive, ask the friends of friends for their contact information so that you can add them to your mailing list for future events.

One of the positives of an open studio event is that you aren’t competing with any other artists - customers can focus fully on your work. Don’t be afraid to provide special deals for your attendees. They may need incentive to attend. I always provide special prices and deals that folks can’t get anywhere else. This year, for example, I had several Super Sale Racks with older paintings at significantly reduced prices which was a huge success. The paintings got homes with folks who love them, I received some income and I freed up some storage space - wins all around.

An open studio event is a great way to add to your annual art sales. If you aren’t currently hosting one, maybe you should.
