The Painting of "Carolina Summer"
/The Painting of “Carolina Summer”
The Summer is nearly over here in North Carolina (according to the sun-tomorrow is the Autumnal Equinox, the official start of autumn). While I am awaiting the glorious colors of autumn, I caught myself thinking about the height of summer. This painting is a celebration of the “everything is green” summers that we have in NC.
I am working on a 12x36 Gallery Wrapped Canvas covered with gesso. The Golden Heavy Body Acrylic Colors used are:
Benzimidazalone Yellow Light
Diarylide Yellow
Cadmium Red Medium Hue
Titan Buff
Cerulean Blue Deep
Ultramarine Blue
Jenkins’s Green
Titanium White
I haven’t done an all green painting for a long time, so I thought I would challenge myself to mix lots of different greens to see what would happen. I’ve never been really good with green and tend to avoid it, but I decided to put on my big boy pants on and give it a go.
The greens for this piece were made by mixing the Cerulean Blue Deep and the Ultramarine Blue with both the warm and cool yellow to make very different greens. I didn’t want the colors to be too bright, so I mixed in a little Cadmium Red Medium Hue to reduce the intensity of each as needed.
The process you see in the video is fairly standard for me: Start with middle value, add some dark value, add some light value. I try to vary the color as I go to add variety. I adjust shapes and values as needed throughout the process.
I hope in some way this was helpful for you as you move forward on your art journey.
