The Painting of "In The Flow 4"

The Painting of “In The Flow 4”

For this post and video, I am doing something just a bit different. Typically when painting on watercolor paper, as I am in this video, the paper is coated with gesso first. I do this to seal the paper and to make the paper surface essentially the same as the canvas surface.

For this painting, I am using watercolor paper with no gesso coating. It is simply raw, cotton paper. You’ll notice that I spray the paper with water first to dampen the paper. I then wipe the water from the surface so there is water in the core of the paper, but no sitting on the surface. The paper is damp, but no wet. This is the way I typically paint with watercolor, so I thought I would try it with acrylic to see what happens.

Here are my Materials:

  • Watercolor Paper: Fabriano Artistico 300 lb cold press

  • Acrylic Paint: GOLDEN Heavy Body Acrylics: Benz Yellow Light, Pyrolle Orange, Cad Red Medium Hue, Medium Magenta, Quinacridone Magenta, Light Violet, Dioxazine Purple, Cerulean Blue, Minty G (custom mixture), Titanium White

  • Brushes: Natural bristle and nylon bristle brushes 2-3” width

  • Backing Board: Corrugated plastic

The paint really flows across the paper with the added water. The paint also seems to have greater transparency on the damp paper. The paint soaks into the paper just a bit, so some of the edges get a really nice, soft feel.

For those that haven’t tried this approach, I highly recommend trying it for something different. It will not be my standard approach, but trying something new or shaking things up now and then keeps it interesting.
