The Painting of "Carolina Spring 2"

The Painting of “Carolina Spring 2”

This painting is obviously sibling to the one shown in last week’s post, and they belong to the same series of paintings.

I love to paint on these 12x36” canvases. I always paint these so that they can be displayed horizontally or vertically, and sign it at a 45 degree angle in the corner so that my signature can be read clearly when displayed in either orientation. Not everyone has a 3’ wide section of wall to display a painting, but almost everyone has a thin strip of a wall just wider than 1’ to display a painting like this. They also look good in pairs and triplets.

I am utilizing a blue-green and red-orange complementary color combination for this painting. As always, I am using Golden Heavy Body Acrylic Paint. Here are the colors I used:

  • Benzimidazolone Yellow Light

  • Pyrrole Orange

  • Cadmium Red Medium Hue

  • Burnt Sienna

  • Cerulean Blue Deep

  • Cobalt Blue Hue

  • Jenkins Green

  • Cobalt Green

  • Cobalt Turquoise

  • Minty G (custom mixture)

  • Titanium White

While mixing the paint on the palette, I neutralized the green colors with the Cadmium Red Medium Hue and did likewise for the blues using the Pyrrole Orange. I was trying to have mostly a muted palette with just a few hints of bright yellow-green and red-orange that pop at my centers of interest. i was going for subtlety here, which is not always my intent.
