How to Increase Sales of Small Paintings

How to Increase Sales of Small Paintings

I get lots of questions from artists about how to sell art and/or how to increase sales of their art. It’s a complicated answer with lots of interconnected components. There are lots of online resources to cover the totality of selling art. This post targets one specific strategy that I have used for more than 20 years to help increase the sales of small paintings.

And you’re wondering what that strategy is, right? It’s almost too simple. My strategy that has resulted in thousands of dollars of extra sales for me is…………..create a pair of paintings that have the same color scheme on the same size canvas so that they “fit” together. I don’t mean a diptych. I mean 2 paintings that work together as a pair, but don’t have to be displayed as a pair.

The sales strategy is this: if a customer is interested in one or both of the paintings, offer to sell them both paintings for a slightly reduced price as incentive for them to purchase both. The purchase can be as much or as little as you determine works for you and the margins you place on your work. Only you can determine what that discount would be. This strategy has literally earned me thousands of extra dollars over the years, and could double, or nearly double, your sales of small paintings.

“Small” size paintings will mean something different for everyone, but for me they are as large as 24x24” and as small as 10x10” (the smallest size I paint). Smaller paintings with lower prices typically sell the best with this strategy.

Give it a shot and see how it works for you - you could be on your way to increasing your art sales.
