Are You Friending the Wrong People on Facebook?
/Are You Friending the Wrong People on Facebook?
I find it interesting that the majority of the friend requests I receive on Facebook are from other artists. I suppose artists feel like they should stick together as a group or a community. While I understand that, I wonder if they are trying to build their art business, or purely just a community of like-minded individuals. Either is OK, but the approaches are different.
If I’m trying to build an art business through using Facebook, I would not friend other artists. Artists aren’t my customers for purchasing art. I also would not necessarily asked them to Like my art page, again because they are not my target customers. They have and make their own art and I shouldn’t presume that they want to purchase my work or that of other artists. Customers who may potentially purchase art are business owners, those in higher income brackets, restaurant owners, hotel franchisees, etc.
If I am trying to build an art business by using Facebook as one of my social media outlets, then I would research who my potential customers may be on Facebook. I can also research and connect with them on LinkedIn, and then follow up with a friend request on Facebook, or follow their business page on Facebook.
Building an art business is a complex undertaking. Using social media can also be a complex undertaking, with so many platforms and possible approaches. Develop a plan that is most comfortable for you and then begin to execute it to see if it is viable. Good luck on the journey.
