It Takes Longer Than You Think
/It Takes Longer Than You Think
Some friends of mine went through a construction project at their house recently and I was able to assist them since I worked as an architect for 30 years. A common question was, why is it taking so long. My response was, It Takes Longer Than You Think. Particularly when renovating, the process takes longer than you think. Conditions are uncovered that weren’t previously seen. Issues arise. Delays occur.
I started to think how this might apply to being a creator. If you’re new to painting, it may take longer than you think to be a proficient painter. It takes longer than you think to learn the fundamentals of how to paint. It takes longer than you think to come up with ideas, or compositions, or move from one medium to another, or master a certain skill. It takes longer than you think to come up with that perfect painting to put into a show.
It’s easy to get frustrated when things take longer - I know I get frustrated easy. My advice is to try and enjoy the process. It may be a new experience, or a new life experience. Try to do the best you can, work hard at what you are trying to accomplish and be confident that you’ll pull through it and you will succeed. Once you accomplish it, put it out into the world so that the rest of us can see it and be joyous in your accomplishment.
