Organize Your Painting Studio

Organize Your Painting Studio

I know I am fortunate to have a dedicated studio space for my work. I know many artists who paint on a kitchen island, a dining table, in a spare bedroom, attic, basement or garage. It’s much easier to have a dedicated space where you can leave your supplies out for easy access and use. I get questions about my setup, so following is a brief description.

All my supplies are located on a large, moveable work table which I constructed out of leftover lumber I had laying around in the garage. I have a shelf on the bottom that holds miscellaneous supplies that rarely get used (extra brushes, glue, rubbing alcohol, brush cleaners, nitrile gloves, etc.). In the middle section I store my gessoed watercolor paper, and a couple of baskets that include hardware for hanging paintings, etc. On the top surface I have my palette area, which consists of a 36x36” piece of white plexiglass (that I cover with wax paper when I paint for easier cleanup), water buckets, water bottle, paper towels, art crayons, brushes and jars of paint.

My brushes are arranged left to right from smallest to largest (2”, 2.5”, 3” 4”), so I can easily grab the size i need while painting. My painting jars are stacked three high and three deep and are kept in order from warm colors on the left moving into cool colors moving right. Keeping these jars in order makes it easy for me to find what I need. I always write an abbreviation for the color on the top of the jar in its corresponding color. This helps me see what the colors are when the jars are stacked. Each time I remove a jar from one of the two back rows, I can immediately see the color underneath.

These organizing “systems” help keep my supplies in order - at least in an order than I can find what I need quickly and easily. Organizing my studio helps me be a more efficient painter.
