Painting Studio Wall Easel
/Painting Studio Wall Easel
I have had so many questions lately about how my studio walls are set, that I thought I would provide a short video with the basic information so that folks can set up something similar in their studios if they wish. Many people call this a “wall Easel,” so that it what I put in the title. I don’t know what else to call it.so we’ll go with that.
I have used this system for at least a decade. It is a very simple system that keeps you from having to put holes in the walls of your studio and provides a solid surface to work on rather than relying on an easel that seems to move every time I put paint to canvas.
I have attached 1x2 wood strips to the wall studs using wood screws. You can find 1x2’s in any big box home improvement retailer in the finished lumber area where the trim boards are located. The spacing of the wood strips will be based on two things: your height, and the size canvases you typically use. The first strip should be placed at a height from the floor equal to your eye line. All the other boards can be spaced according to personal preference, and based on the size canvases used and how they would best be supported on the wall.
To hang the canvases from the wood strips I use #8, 1-1/2” or 1-5/8” long wood screws (whichever is in stock at the store). I screw the wood screws into the wood strips wherever I need them and hang the canvas from them. FYI, if the screws are too long, the canvases will not sit flush to the wood strips.
I hope this helps you set up a more functional studio space.
