6 Quick, Intuitive Abstract Paintings in Violet
/6 Quick, Intuitive Abstract Paintings in Violet
This video, and those like it show me practicing my painting skills. These 10x10 studies help me learn to paint quickly, make decisions quickly, paint spontaneously and react to each new color and/or value placed before me.
I want to emphasize that this exercise is not exclusive to abstract painting. No matter if you’re a landscape painter, floral painter or figurative painter, this type of exercise will help make you a better painter. It’s meant to be practice painting, not “I’m going to paint a masterpiece today” painting. I limit my colors, use small surfaces (10x10” 140lb watercolor paper covered with gesso) and move quickly across all 6 surfaces. I don’t want to spend lots of time mixing colors, so I use only a few. Fewer colors limits my decision making while painting - which is a good thing.
For those that will ask if I don’t address it, here are my colors from Golden Heavy Body Acrylic Paint:
Dioxazine Purple
Cobalt Violet Hue
Quinacridone Magenta
Neutral Gray 6 (which I put on the palette but forgot to use)
Custom Blue-Violet Mixture
Titanium White
I also used Marabu Art Crayons which are great for making line work. I am using 2” natural bristle brushes and a scraper made from an old paint brush.
If you aren’t doing exercises like this (or haven’t), then give it a try. It will get you into a good practice routine, help loosen you up and make painting fun again.
