Artists Keep Yourselves Strong
/Artists Keep Yourselves Strong
Sometimes I need to be reminded that making art is manual labor and I need to keep myself strong in order to make it successfully for a long period of time. Maybe that’s something all artists should keep in mind, particularly as we grow older (in our 60’s, 70’s and 80’s).
Making art can be more grueling than non-artists can imagine. Sometimes we stand for long periods of time, we move a lot if making large paintings, we sometimes manipulate heavy weights if we are creating sculpture, etc. You can fill in the blanks how making art effects YOUR body. It doesn’t take long to realize the manual labor of art making can be strenuous.
I realized a few years ago that I needed to get in better shape so I began resistance training (weight lifting) three days a week, after a layoff of around 40 years. I don’t do it to look like a body builder or a muscle man, I do it as a means to be healthier. Research is beginning to show that resistance training is one of the best ways to exercise your body. It helps build muscle (which cushions your bones and joints), lubricates your joints, helps increase bone density, burn body fat, as well as develop a host of other healthy benefits for your body.
If you have health issues that negatively effect your ability to create the art you want to make, maybe now is a good time to develop a plan to address those issues. The world needs to see what you’re making, and we want you to be able to make art as long as possible.
Good luck, and keep moving forward!
