Artists, What are You Known For?
/Artists, What are You Known For?
I think this is an interesting question and I wonder how many artists ask themselves this question. I see too many artists trying to do too many things. My experience is that if you try to do too many things you may only be really good at doing one of those things.
If you think of some of the most famous painters in history, an image probably pops into your head for each one: Van Gogh, Monet, Gauguin, Pollack. That image is probably what they are best known for. Van Gogh for instance, landscape paintings with lots of movement, bold brushwork and thick paint. Monet created light filled, impressionistic landscapes. Gauguin did very rich, lushly colored figurative paintings from Tahiti. Jackson Pollack was best known for his drip paintings which were only done toward the end of his career.
Being able to do many kinds of art is fine, but if you are selling your work it is much more difficult to sell work in multiple categories/styles/approaches. I always encourage students to stick with the one thing that makes them the most happy, and get really good at it. For me that is a much stronger approach than trying to do three or four things and not being very good at any of them.
I stick with only one thing, which is abstract paintings. I try to be as good as I can be with that one thing. As Brian Rutenberg says, “Nail one foot to he floor so you can only work in a small area.”
