Improvisational Abstract Painting-1
/Improvisational Abstract Painting-1
Here are six more small 10x10” practice paintings done on 140lb Fabriano Artistico cold press watercolor paper. I get so much out of painting these small pieces. What was a once in awhile activity has turned into a regular ritual. I used Golden Heavy Body Acrylic Paint, Marabu Art Crayons and Lukas Cryl Acrylic Paint.
I am utilizing a complementary color combination of blue and orange with blue as the dominant color and orange as the accent color.
Here are my colors for this painting (Golden Heavy Body Acrylics):
Burnt Sienna
Pyrrole Orange
Cerulean Blue Deep
Neutral Gray 6 (N6) (on my palette, but didn’t use)
Titanium White
Here is my Lukas Cryl color:
Indigo (typically I make my own “Indigo” using Golden’s Anthraquinone Blue and Mars Black, however Golden has not been able to produce Anthraquinone Blue for nearly a year because of pigment shortages. The Lukas Cryl color is good, but much warmer than Anthraquinone Blue.
Painting these small pieces I limit my colors and do almost no mixing on the palette prior to painting. I use a simple 4 step process for these:
Add some lines to loosen up feel free.
Add my accent color for my centers of interest.
Add the dark value of the dominant color.
Fill in the light and light middle values, and refine as needed.
If you haven’t tried this exercise yet, you should. It doesn’t matter what kind of painting you do, landscapes, still life, abstract, the same process will work for all types of subject matter. Set yourself a time limit so you don’t linger too long anywhere. Move quickly, use your intuition and just let go. You’l'l be amazed how much fun you’ll have.
