The Painting of "Amber Fusion 2"

The Painting of “Amber Fusion 2”

In this painting I am continuing my experimentation with muted yellow, black, gray and white. I absolutely love this color combination - which is a bit odd given I have never been a fan of yellow paintings. My intentions for this painting are twofold: 1. To use color right out of the jar without any pre-mixing on the palette, 2. To limit my color palette.

Here are my colors for this painting (Golden Heavy Body Acrylics):

  • Indian Yellow Hue

  • Naples Yellow Hue

  • Mars Black

  • Neutral Gray 4 (N4)

  • Neutral Gray 6 (N6)

  • Titanium White

Here are my Art Crayon Colors (Marabu Art Crayons):

  • Black

  • Ochre

I start with some art crayon scribbles just for fun. It’s fun because you start with a little drawing, which is freeing as you begin a painting. It sets a loose mood.

I typically begin my paintings by either putting in my dark middle values or putting in the accent color. In this case it’s the accent colors that go on first, in this case Indian Yellow Hue followed by Naples Yellow Hue. Since these are the only two actual colors in the painting, I know they will stand out as accents without any modification of the color or the value.

I then add in the dark value and dark middle value, followed by the lightest value of Titanium White. I mix the white a bit with some yellow and gray, mostly doing so on the canvas. I finish with a few strokes of the art crayon and I’m finished.

I met my intentions using a simple composition, a simple color palette and a simple technique - all the while staying loose and free. Why does it have to be complicated?
